What are the Smartum Lunch benefit payment instruments?

An employer can offer Smartum Lunch payment instruments to an employee for personal meals.

As a Smartum partner, you should check that the services paid for with Smartum Lunch benefit payment instruments are in accordance with the Finnish Tax Administration instructions on meal benefits. According to the current instructions, a lunch benefit cannot be used to pay for alcohol, tobacco, groceries, ready-made meals, or industrially packaged food.

Electronic lunch payments

What are the things I should consider when accepting electronic Smartum Lunch payments?

In 2019, customers can use the electronic Smartum Lunch benefit for €6.60 - €10.50 at the time. If the balance on the card is less than €6.60, the customer cannot use the card to pay for a meal. If the meal costs more than €10.50, ask the customer to pay the excess amount in cash or with another payment method. If you try to charge the customer for an amount below €6.60, the customer will still be charged the minimum amount of €6.60.

The customer cannot get cashback or receive change from payments made with Smartum payment instruments. No additional fees may be charged for making the payment, and any excess amounts can be paid in cash or with another payment method.

Accepting Smartum payment card

The customer cannot get cashback or receive change from payments made with the Smartum payment card. No extra fees may be charged from the customer when paying with a Smartum payment card. In 2019, the customer can use the Smartum card to pay for a meal costing from €6.60 to €10.50, or a part of the sum. Customers can pay for any amount exceeding the voucher value in cash or using another payment method.

The Smartum payment card is a Visa chip card. After reading the card, the payment terminal prints out a receipt, which is then signed by the customer to confirm the payment. Smartum needs your payment terminal information in order for the transaction to succeed. To provide us with the necessary payment terminal information, you need to conduct a test payment using the Smartum activation card that will be sent to you as soon as your company is registered as a Smartum partner.

Payments made with a Smartum payment card are always verified. If the verification request made by the payment terminal is not approved, the transaction cannot be completed. Any amendments to the transactions should be made using the payment terminal according to the equipment supplier’s instructions.

What do I do if my customer’s Smartum card does not work when they try to make a payment?

Payments made with a Smartum card are always verified. If the verification request made by the payment terminal is not approved, the transaction must not be completed. Possible reasons for a negative verification notice include:

  • The balance on the card is insufficient. -> Try to make a smaller payment.
  • The amount exceeds the maximum value of €10.50 determined for the year 2019 by the Tax Administration. -> Charge the card for a smaller sum and ask the customer to pay the difference in cash or by using another card.
  • The balance on the card is for exercise or culture. -> Payments cannot be made in a restaurant.
  • The Smartum system does not recognize your payment terminal. -> contact our customer service on weekdays from 8:30 - 16:00, telephone +358 600 149 88 or email asiakaspalvelu@smartum.fi, so that we can add your payment terminal to our system.
Is it possible to overdraw your account when using the Smartum card?

It is not possible. The Smartum card is a prepaid card, payments can only made for amounts as high as the balance in the account. The card can be used to pay for meals at lunchtime in accordance with the current meal benefit mandate of the Finnish Tax Administration. In 2019, the amount available at any one time is €6.60 - €10.50.

What are the values of Smartum lunch vouchers?

The value of the Smartum Lunch voucher is written on the voucher. In 2019, Smartum Lunch vouchers with seven different values are in circulation: €8.20, €8.70, €9.00, €9.70, €10.00, €10.40 and €10.50.

How can I check the authenticity and validity of Smartum vouchers?

In order to prevent forgery, Smartum vouchers are printed by security printers, and they contain several security features. Please check that the voucher is intact and authentic, and that it has not been marked as used. You can identify an authentic voucher that is printed on watermarked paper by checking the consecutive serial number or by looking at the voucher against a light source, for example. Smartum will only pay for authentic vouchers. Also check that the voucher is valid; customers cannot make payments using expired vouchers.

How do I mark used vouchers?

Used vouchers are marked by drawing a line across the value of the voucher printed on the voucher. Please leave the white area at the bottom unmarked.
